Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about trials, subs, kit, and how we run sessions at Cheam Sports FC.

How much does it cost?

We run subs at cost - roughly £300 to £400 per season depending on your team's training commitments. The trial is free and there is no pressure to commit. Full breakdown of what is and is not included is on our subs & fees page.

What does my child need to bring?

Football boots, shin pads, dark shorts and socks (no specific kit needed for trials), and a water bottle. We will sort out the kit once they join.

Can my child try before committing?

Absolutely. Every player starts with a trial period. There is no pressure to commit. We want to make sure it is the right fit for your child and for the team.

My child already plays for another club. Can they still trial?

Yes. Players are welcome to come and train with us. If they decide to join, we will help with the transfer process through the league.

What age groups do you have?

We currently have teams from Under 12s to Under 15s in the Surrey Youth League, with new teams forming. Check the team pages for the exact age groups this season.

You do not run my child's age group. Can anything be done?

If we do not currently have a team at that age, we cannot offer a place in the same way we do for existing squads. We have to be honest about that. We are, however, open to starting new age-group teams when the foundations are right: committed players, committed parents, and a clear plan. For example, if your child is in a school year we do not yet cover, a parent who wants to pull together a squad for that age is welcome to contact the club. A volunteer lead (often a parent stepping forward to coach or organise) should get in touch, ideally with a core group of players already in mind. We can then talk through league requirements, safeguarding, and what it takes to get a new side off the ground.

Do you run girls' teams?

We have run girls' teams at Cheam Sports FC before, and we are very open to offering them again. If your daughter would like to play with us, or you would like to help get a girls' side going, please get in touch with the club and we can talk through what is possible and what might be needed.

Is it competitive or just for fun?

Both. All our teams compete in the Surrey Youth League, but player development and enjoyment come first. We want players who love the game and want to improve.

Do scouts and academies watch Cheam Sports FC players?

Yes. We play in the Surrey Youth League at a standard scouts pay attention to, and over the years many scouts have come to watch our games and our players. Players from Cheam Sports FC have been scouted before and invited into academy programmes, and that is still happening today: talented players here get seen. We are proud of that and we want it to keep going. Professional clubs make their own decisions about trials and places, but if your child is serious about football, this is a club where committed players can put themselves on the radar.

What level of experience does my child need?

Most of our players are used to regular team training and match football, because we play in the Surrey Youth League. We do not expect perfection. We look for enthusiasm, coachability, and room to grow. If you are unsure, book a trial and let the coaches see your child on the pitch.

My child has mostly played informal or recreational football. Can they still trial?

Yes. Backgrounds vary: school football, holiday courses, or more casual local leagues can feel very different from youth league matches, and it is not always obvious on paper how a player will adapt. Some children step up quickly. We are open to meeting every family who wants to try. After a session, our coaches will give you honest, supportive feedback so you know whether we are the right fit right now.

What if my child is nervous about coming alone?

Totally normal. Our coaches are experienced at welcoming new players and making them feel part of the group. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the session.

Are the coaches qualified and DBS checked?

Yes. All coaches hold valid DBS checks and coaching qualifications. We are an FA Accredited Club and follow all FA safeguarding guidelines.
